Monceaux
A
history buff, Morgan Monceaux finds inspiration from a fascination with the narratives of visionary artists, leaders and cultural
icons. His passion for creative expression takes structure in the form of character series devoted to cultural, social
and political luminaries; meticulously researched and explored. The product of this passion and exploration translates into series
such as “The Presidents”, a portrait of every United
States president from George Washington to Barack Obama; “The Royals”- a portrait
series of international royalty; “Jazz Innovators”-
a series depicting musicians from the tradition of jazz and blues, as abstract and mixed media portraits, and “The Dancers".
Seen/Unseen features portraits from the Jazz,
Royals, Miss America, Blacks in the Military, and Presidential First
Ladies series.
Monceaux rose to fame after creating his first
series (George to George) of all the U.S. presidents, from Washington to (then) Bush. In
the 1992 New Yorker magazine article "Hail to the Chiefs", writer Adam Gopnik
referred to the series as 'a unique meditation on history'.
A true visionary
artist, Monceaux is perhaps best known for his portrait depictions of political and cultural figures. His portraits
of Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, and B.B. King are included in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in
Washington, D.C. Books to his credit include Jazz—My People, My Music, Shall
We Dance, and My Heroes, My People: African Americans
and Native Americans in the West.
