David C. Driskell: Doorway

Painter, Printmaker, and Scholar David C. Driskell

Exhibits at New Door Creative in Baltimore

Selected works by internationally renowned artist David C. Driskell will be on view at New Door Creative Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, February 6th through 27th, 2010.

The exhibition includes serigraphs, woodcuts, and linocuts created at the Experimental Printmaking Institute (EPI) at Lafayette College, in addition to a select group of oil and mixed media works on canvas. The presentation offers a fascinating glimpse of the inventive range of this important modern artist.

Entitled “Doorway”, the exhibition shares the name of the featured portfolio of twelve hand-pulled serigraphs and is a parallel effort of imagery and prose. These richly colored prints appear as jewels, brilliant in the artist’s investigation of organic multiples, forest stories, and liquid line and curve; in settings of compositions that breathe. The viewer can anticipate a visual experience that can best be described as fulfilling.

The reputation of David Driskell as an artist pre-dates an often more widely acknowledged reputation as a scholar of African American art and culture.  The recipient of the National Humanities Medal in 2000, David Driskell has demonstrated an extended professional life of art-making in devotion to a canon and cultural aesthetic largely defined by his creative and intellectual influence.
